  1. Spinning is indoor cycling classes. Spin bikes are highly customizable to your body and are more like real bikes than exercise bikes. Usually an instructor will have music playing and try to imitate a real road ride with hills and everything. Many cyclists (who don't want to cycle outside in the winter) train on spin bikes during the winter. They are as close to a real road bike as you can get but still be inside (unless one uses their actual road bike on a trainer).

  2. Spinning is when you turn the pedals on a bicycle at a rate above 70 revolutions per minute.  The faster the more you are spinning (the pedals).  Higher r.p.m.s means less pedal resistence per revolution.  We humans do not produce even 1/4 horse power so by using high spinning we can make up for being such weakings a little.  National level cyclists spin consistantly above 90 and some above 100 rpms for hours.

Spinning classes at a fitness workout center are indeed stationary bicycles.  They are very adjustable and have special pedals.  The pace can be brutal and the workout is totally aerobic and burns up a lot of extra calories.  I prefer to use a real bike as the scenery changes more often and you get the effect of the real wind.
