Whats thae safest way to protect yourself from a hurricane?

There are two safe places to be in your home. Either the basement which would protect you from debris hitting your home or the most interior part of your house, usually a small closet. Make sure you hide under something like a matress in case there is falling debris too.

Once an evacuation is called, get out and don't take any chances.  New Orleans didn't all leave, and look what happened.

If the storm comes your way unexpectedly, then you DO NOT get into your car.  Only then do you go into your basement or someplace near pipes.  The pipes provide structural integrity.  Stay away from glass.  Be sure to have plenty of food and water in case of such an emergency.  And a radio with batteries, so you know what's going on in the world around you.  

BUT DO NOT STAY AND TRY TO WEATHER THE STORM.  IF IT'S PREDICTED TO HIT YOU, GET OUT NOW!!!!!!!!!

We drove toward Houston when Hurricaine Carla was getting ready to strike.  Weren't listening to the radio.  We stayed with three other families in a house a bit higher than the surrounding area and were about 21 miles from the coast and were blasted.  No damage to the house but it shook and the light pole outside swayed in the wind.  There were dead cows all over the place afterward.  The only person who died lived on the coast and refused to leave.

I firmly believe that the best way to protcect yourself in the event of a hurricane is to LEAVE. go far away in the opposite direction in which the storm is traveling. seriously that has to be the best way to protect yourself in a hurricane. I was in hurricane andrew and even the hospital was torn apart in miami and that sort of building you would expect to be very strong. it faltered. so if you are stuck in a hurricane you can always go to a well contructed building and pray that youll make it through.
