Whats the 2 second driving rule?

i just saw it on an allstate commercial and i have no idea what it means .

  1. Following distance. It means leave two seconds between you and the car in front of you. So the faster you're going, the more distance you need to allow so that you can respond to an emergency in time.

    In other words, don't tailgate.


  2. The amount of time you wait before you pull-out behind a car. There are certain conditions when this rule isn't appropriate, such as rain, ice, snow etc etc... I normally stay pretty far back to give myself some time to react.

  3. That is the min, safe following distance.
