  1. Just a guide really.

A guide for umpires, helping with 50m penalties.

A guide for commentators with distance and for players.

  2. well the 50 arc is realy there for the players and people watching the game know where the ball is in realation to the goals. and it is just helpful for those that think they can kick 50 meters and they can try but yeah it helps players and spectators in relation to the goals.

  3. It helps the umpires estimate measurement on the ground, it also helps players estimate distance from goal and helps them to find their position on the ground. It is also a very helpful guide to spectators and commentators watching the game.

  4. its just used as a reference and it does help a lot.

As someone said, it helps the umpires as a guide for how long 50m is (its hard when your on the ground and not in the stands!!) If im a fair way out of the 50 and I give a 50, i always use a reference point to guess how far out of the 50 I am and then if I get into the 50, I know how far back I should go.

Then its for the commentators.....if there was no 50, the couldnt say 'he is 47 meters out'...they would just say 'around 50'

And the players also need it....they need to know if they are in range or not...some players can kick the ball 45m but not 55m....some would not notice if they were 10m out of range!

  5. It gives a guide to the umpires when handing out 50m penalties and also it adds a little extra to the game knowing how far a player to kicking from.

  6. im guessing it's so players can see how far away it is to the goals, and compare it to how far they know they can kick perhaps? or maybe to help the umpires when giving 50 metre penaltys.

  7. yeah i think there great

  8. Just so the commentators can estimate how far out and to help the umpires show players where they kick from

  9. It's ok, they never used to have it as you know but i have grown to like it, i like to see how far they are out myself,  when i watch old grand finals, its so hard to tell how far out they are etc.

why do we need one in pre season but not the season proper, not real sure what you mean there.
