I Dont know how to approch my father with this. My dad wants to buy a cheap car so that if i total it it wont be a big deal to buy a new one. But ive been talking to my drivers training instructors and they have been telling me to buy a more expensive car that will last longer and is safer. I dont know how to tell my dad that im uncomfortable with driving a cheapy car that could potentially get me killed. I was wondering what is the best safest car for a new driver that isnt a SUV or a Truck. Keep in mind i have a budget.

Thanks for the advice

  1. A less expensive car may not necessarily be an unsafe car.

  2. First of all if you drive carefully you shouldn't get in an accident. If you have it in mind that you ere going to total it you aren't ready for the responsibility it takes to be safe driver. The age of  the car has nothing to do with how safe it is. You are looking for an excuse to get dad to spring for a fancier car.

  3. I'm looking for my first car so my dad bought me a consumer reports car guide. It has a lot of good info on pricing, safety, pros, cons, etc. How about the new Honda Civics? They have good crash ratings and good mpg. Since you are a new driver get something used.

  4. i am either gettin my dads '99 Acura TL or possibly a used car. The problem is, i am 6'5" and as a 16 year old, dont have a lot of money to buy a bigger car. I cant fit in most of my friends cars (most have small ones). As long as you can fit and isnt in bad shape, an older car is the better way to go for a first car. Im hoping to get my dads since i can fit in it for some reason.

  5. In reality a mid-size sedan would be your best bet plus the insurance rates will be easier to handle........

  6. You don't need to get a new car for it to be safe. A used mid level car(Accord, Camry, Altima, Impala, etc.) would all be safe for a reasonable price(10-15K).

  7. The cheapest one...

  8. If you have little money and want a very reliable car you could get a Geo/Chevrolet Prizm they last forever and they dont cost much and since teenagers dont have much money you would want a car that has excellent reliability ratings which the Prizm does. I would wait until after you have driven for a few years before I would get a brand new car. The safety rating is also pretty good for an older car. I think another good choice might would be a used Hyundai Ive heard they are pretty good cars now and they have a long warranty in case something would go wrong with the car the best thing is the resale on those cars isnt to great so you can get a good deal on one. Honda Civic is a nice car but it cost a good bit to get one repaired when it does have a problem and after having several family members having one I dont thinkg they are as reliable as people try to make them out to be. I would watch out for anything made by Ford or any Chrysler products. Good Luck

  9. I like the Honda Civic Coupe. It's a nice car (2 door). It's not expensive and has great gas mileage. I think it is pretty safe, altho not 100% sure.

  10. I worked for the largest  driving  school in Canada . its owned by Ford. We used Hondas  . A little work horse . If your dad doesnt  have condidence  may be your not ready. Cars  are like guns they  dont kill people  People do

  11. My first car was a black trans am for $900 when I was 15(3 years ago), I spent around seven or eight grand(every penny I ever made just about) restoring it over the coarse of a year until I got my license. The car was FAST, dangerous(no airbag, only a roll cage), and obnoxiously loud, but loads of fun. 3 months after it was on the road, I was on the way home from a car show and I had an accident(not my fault, and completely unavoidable)...totaled. I bought the car back from the insurance company and then bought one EXACTLY like it, the next few months were spent putting all my new stuff that was on the totaled car onto the new one, I still have the new one and will never sell it, so what I'm telling you is find a beater and spend the extra money on fixing it up, if it gets hit rebuild it, there's always a way. I saved loads considering all my friends had new cars(sti's, evo's, z28's)but I spent half as much all together and had twice the fun, BTW newer(mines old) Trans Am's are VERY safe, and can be purchased for around 5k, if you keep your foot outta the peddal it gets good gas mileage as well.
