  1. P-Celtic (Welsh-family) languages used to be spoken all along the Western coast of Britain - including most of present day Lancashire and a large chunk of the Lake District.

Old Cumbric (the P-Celtic language between Chester and Kendal) is almost entirely lost - apart from a few words on Dark-Ages monuments - but the sheep-counting system which was used in the Lake District down to the Industrial Revolution (and in children's games until the 1960s) seems to retain substantial Celtic elements.

The counting system is more of a curiosity than anything else - but it does suggest strongly that the Anglo-Saxon invaders moved in more by intermarriage than by conquest.

  2. Cumbric was one of the Celtic languages. It was also one of the Brythonic languages like Welsh.

    Its extinct now.
