  1. Contrary to popular belief, Maxima remained faithful to the Catholic church instead of converting to the religion of the Prince, although agreed that her children would be raised as Protestants. Like all Dutch monarchs, Prince Willem-Alexander is a nominal member of the Protestant Dutch Reformed Church and religion was not a major issue in the Prince's marriage, simply because he remained a Protestant, therefore, he is still currently the heir apparent to the Dutch throne.

The Act of Settlement of 1701, which excludes British royal Catholics and royal members with a Catholic spouse from inheriting the British throne, is only a British Act, it does not apply to the Dutch royal family. Although it was a constitutional tradition and not a law that forbade a Catholic to reign over the Netherlands, it was a practice predicated upon a history of the Protestant-dominated Dutch Parliament (States-General) born out of the 16th century war with Spain.

Note: The prince is a direct descendant of Anne, Princess Royal, eldest daughter of British King George II. However, under the British Act of Settlement, Prince Willem-Alexander forfeited his (distant) succession rights to the throne of each of the sixteen Commonwealth Realms, because he married a Roman Catholic.

  2. Who?????

  3. i dont remember the link, but i do know she did not give up catholicism, and in turn her husband, the Prince of Orange (heir to the dutch throne), lost his succession in the line to the british throne, although her children didnt.
