  1. its a muscle use in mastication.......its called pterygoid because in the skull there is a bone that has that name ...The bone is called pterygoid because it looks like a bat.... ptery=> means "wing" like pterodactyls "winged dinosaur" and its internus because is attached to the lateral border of the pterygoid bone in the skull. The other side of the muscle is attached to the maxilla .......so relaxation of the muscle will open the mouth and contraction will bring the maxilla up producing the mastication movement......
