It's hard to quote an average. The quality of the paint and the amount and quality of the body work and paint prep can make a huge difference. You can get cheap paint jobs, that'll look cheap and start to come off in a couple of years, from $400 and up. Quality paint jobs usually start around $3000 to $4000. I have a couple of old Mustangs and paint and body work on them ran me a bit over $8000 on each one.

You get what you pay for most of the time. How nice do you want it to look? Maaco advertises paint jobs for a few hundred bucks. A gallon of cheap paint starts at around $100 and goes up quickly. A big cost of doing paint work is usually fixing any small dents or dings that will really show up after applying new paint.
