it's the last leg of the triple crown races and the longest at 1 1/2 miles. if the filly rags to riches runs it will be a h**l of a race because it seems like the boys are taking turn beating each other so it just might be hard spun turn to win..c/ya in 3 weeks.

As far as I am concerned, it is THE best race of the Triple Crown, whether or not a horse is going for it.  Parking is easy, the busing is not confusing unless you forget where you have parked, and have never had a problem with seats.  You can sit in the picnic area out back on a nice day and watch the races on a TV.  I have done this several times.  No problems with getting in bets, like I did at the derby and preakness.  Plus, you can take a train there and forget about driving.  My choice of transportation.

The Belmont stakes is 1-1/2 miles on the dirt at Belmont Park.  It was originally conceived by Leonard Jerome, one of the three "founding fathers" of American racing, W. R. Travers, Leonard Jerome and August Belmont, as the American equivalent of the English Derby and is run at the same distance as the Derby at Epsom and at roughly the same time (early June).

Belmont Park is a big old racetrack that was built in 1905, re-built in 1917 following a fire, and re-built again in 1968.  It was designed during the halcyon days of racing when crowds of 50,000 to 60,000 weren't unusual.  Nowadays, unless there's a triple crown in the offing, it rarely sees anything like that size of crowd.

Still, it's a beautiful track with lots of trees and room, and well worth going to see, especially knowing how much history it has behind it.  

The Belmont Stakes this year will probably have a field of 12 or less.  There's no Triple Crown at stake, but Curlin and Street Cry are a formidable pair.  The problem with the Belmont is that at 1-1/2 miles, it's farther than most racehorses will ever go again in their careers.  

It's usually a good race to watch.  It's been won in epic fashion by Secretariat, who beat his nearest rival by a widening 31 lengths;  it's been contested right down to the last bob of the nose at the wire (Affirmed and Alydar);  it's been won by horses that were one-paced stayers and horses that were brilliant speed horses who stole the race.  It's a great race to watch, without all the hullaballoo that surrounds the Derby and the crazy atmosphere of the Preakness.

Are you planning on going to Belmont Park to watch live racing on June 9th?

If so, the atmosphere there is in one word........"madhouse"!

Unless you get there hours before the 1st race, or reserved a spot, you will be parking far away from the track. Bus transportation to the parking areas is confusing. Bumper to bumper people, drunk college kids, poor viewing areas if you don't have reserved seats, 5 bucks will get you a can of beer,

bet early or be shut out, wear comfortable shoes, bring plenty of $. Since there will be no Triple crown winner this year the attendance will  probably be under 100,000.

But if you are a hardcore racing fan, it's worth the experience.
