I want a mtb or maybe a hybrid that i could ride to work and do a little bit of off-road on the weekends... that has decent suspension.. can go fast on both road and off-road.. double discs... one that is reliable and wont break. I have been looking at either:..

Specialized Hardrock Comp Disc 2008 (http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=27865)

Can anyone help me decide what bike to pick? or an even better bike.. with the budget of £300.

Also If anyone knows of a reliable place to get the bike that is cheap.. i'd aprappreciate if you could let me know

Thanks

  1. i would say the Saracen element 3  because its the best bike for under 300 pound

  2. I know nothing about bikes but there are loads on the police auction site. I think bikes are collection only so you'd need to search near you but you might pick up a bargain!

  3. I got my bike - a Dave Hinde M3 - from Cash Converters. Some rich university kiddie had bviously asked daddy for a bike, decided it was too much hard work, and given it to a pawn shop. It was practically new when I got it; and a bike that would have cost 1500 quid came into my possession for 220.

However, I agree with the above person. People don't nick rubbish bikes; you can pick up a really decent set of wheels at a police auction for next to nothing.

The worst thing you can do is buy new. Waste of money. Find out the indicators of a bad bike (ruffled paint around the joints, etc), and check out either pawn shops, or police auctions.

  4. You should look around bike shops. there will be a lot of sales of 07/08 models as it nears xmas. You know that both of your links are discontinued

  5. Get a second hand one if you're looking for quality.

Most Specialized bikes are up to the task, however you've got to think:

    - Do you really need discs both front and rear? You'll be compromising the quality of other parts on a budget.

The most important parts you should be looking for are:

    - Wheel rims. Cheap ones WILL buckle under stress.

Anyway, go for the Specialized. Having double discs and suspension is no substitute for skill and fitness. Good look!
