I think that the best is Wireless N 802.11n. I want the router with the BEST range and speed. Price is not an obstacle.

I have a playstation 3 that is about 50 feet away from the computer and i only get 51%. and studders when streaming HD video I want one that gives me close to 100%.

Note: I have an 8+ mbps network so i want the full potential i can get with wireless.

  1. Wireless GS is about 13 times as fast as your internet connection, so the router speed isn't important.

A 51% signal means that you're too far from the router, or you have the antennas oriented incorrectly.  To increase the signal to 100% by increasing signal strength you'd have to increase transmitter power (at both the router and the computer) by about 5 times - that's both impossible and, if it was possible, illegal).  Reorient the antennas or use high gain antennas - changing the router isn't going to help.  (For one thing, no matter which router you use, the computer's wireless adapter doesn't change, and you need to increase power on both ends.)

Oh, and you won't be seeing 8mbps sustained throughput on the internet for quite a few years yet, unless you stick to lightly loaded servers that are close to your provider's connection to the backbone.

  2. i have a LINKSYS one..its great.. we have a Wireless G and my brothers ps3 is totally in another room (more than 50ft) and it works great..plus i use my laptop in my room, with noo problem and my touch and my bro also uses his psp everything.. it doesnt get a 100% signal strength, but close to 85-90.. and the speed is just as fast!

    good luck! :]

  3. Wireless routers are one big con job

The numbers on the box have nothing to do with reality

At the best the speed is only half of the stated box speed - due to overhead

Even if you get an n router - unless your playstation network adapter is n then lol - it will not go any faster for you

Ditto that for speed boost routers - they need a matching adapter

Even with n its not really n

Somewhere on the box it will say "pre n"

Who knows what n will be and if your n will work well with next years or this years router from another vendor.

    All routers are fairly good

Unless you have a matching networking card with some proprietary speed boost - then get a standard g router

    All are fine

If there is one that is best it is an older version Linksys WRT54G router with a 3d party firmware upgrade

This router was reintroduced by Linksys as the Linksys WRT54GL router

tomato is very good and simple

one of the major key benefits to you is to boost the power big time

    for better speeds and reception

Here are some sources for the Linksys WRT54GL in addition to amazon

Of much more importance than even the choice of the router is proper setup and placement

Change the channel from the default channel 6

Your neighbors wireless signals will drift in long distances out of the blue - you will get interference - no internet ( or slow) but a great signal strength

Change the ssid from  the default - even if to add a single digit

One user had 5 Linksys routers in his area - all set to the ssid linksys and on default channel 6

Change the channel to any other of the 12 channels

Channels 1 and 11 are first picks as they are the other two distinct channels

You may want to set the wireless to g only rather than "mixed "  ( that is b and g  if you have only g adaptors and not the older b

turn on the encryption to prevent other log ons ( can be accidental)

    slowing your speed

Lastly make sure the router is high , unobstructed and not cluttered

People sometimes get a good wireless router , then place it in the basement , on the floor , in a utility room under a heavy metal desk.

    lots of luck with reception

  4. I don't have experience a N network (it is fairly new, and not cheap), so I don't know the range and performance.

For G, Linksys WRT54GL is the best, can use third party FW like dd-wrt

If you really want wireless N router, check them out in newegg.com, get the most and best reviewed that can use third party FW.
