  7. Many people have the mistaken idea that free is not good.

The other day, my free anti-virus program caught a Trojan virus.

To ensure that the virus caught is not a false positive,

I upload it to virus total web site to check.

    http://www.virustotal.com/analisis/c3558...

To my surprise, all the big names in Anti-virus industry cannot detect

the Trojan. The one that detect the Trojan are mainly the free version.

Later, I found out that most malwares are designed to attack popular

antivirus products (like Symantec, McAfee or Norton), but since free anti-virus

product is much less used, it's capable of fighting the viruses when

    industry leaders fail.

So I would go for the free version rather than the bloated and

    unreliable branded version.

I would suggest that you get Avast Home Edition version 4,

which is free for personal use.

Avast is a very effective and free anti-virus program because it can do

a boot time scan in safe mode and it will remove the entire virus on your PC.

Even those viruses that hide inside the system restore folder.

Windows utilize a restore utility that backs up selected files

automatically to the System volume information /System Restore folder.

This means that an infected file could be stored there as a backup file,

and most anti-virus programs will be unable to delete these files. You

must disable the System Restore Utility to remove the infected files

from the folder if you use another brand of anti-virus. However, you do

not need to do so if you use Avast to do a boot up scan in safe mode.

  8. I have used avast for several years, and have always found it to be very effective and not in any way obtrusive.

I also use spybot (without installing teatimer) which is excellent at clearing out spyware.

Both excellent free programs which have very frequent free updates.

  9. Here is a list of all antivirus rankings --

Number 10 in this list happen to be free, yet still outscores many paid antivirus.  You can download it from

    http://www.free-av.com

You can see where norton and mcafee are ranked in this list. They are beaten by many others.

And I think this is the only list on internet which ranks all antivirus that exist.

The best in the world per this list is G-DATA. Its an extremely powerful antivirus, but also very pricey.

  10. I've cleaned up many deeply infected computers and these programs are the best. ~ Patrick :-)

Stay away from AVG and Norton's neither has high detection / removal rates, and Nortons will slow your computer to a crawl.

The top rated Antivirus/Spyware suite by those who test antivirus programs (av-comparitives, virus.gr, etc) is Kaspersky

(I have used this to clean up machines that nothing else would work on.

download a 30 day free trial here.
