  1. Leidsplein is a good area to stay.  It's right where many things are happening, with a park nearby.   It's also near Damrak which seemed like a street we were on a lot.  It's where the s*x Museum is.

  2. Stay at the RHO off of Dam Square... it's right in the middle of all the action... green as well as red... haaha.  I stayed there for a night on my last layover there and it was a much better deal than the Radisson SAS.  Another option is a managed apt. or a houseboat.  I stayed in a housebout the time before last - it was at oosterdock (close to the redlight district) and it was a cool experience, but next time I'll either do the Rho or an apartment.

http://www.citymundo.com is a good service to get you hooked up with a houseboat or an apt.

The Rho can be booked here: http://en.venere.com/hotels_amsterdam/ni...

[edit]  If you want to go to the museums and parks, then the Leidseplein is in the perfect location... but if you want to hit the coffee shops, you need to be at Dam Square, or Nieuwmarkt (the coffee shops and red light district are right between the two)

  3. you can actually call any or all hotels out there and ask them about their entertainment options in the area..they should beable to give you a pretty good idea of whats around there.

  4. There are coffeshops and bars everywhere, so it doesn't really matter where you stay.  The tram will get you anywhere in minutes, Amsterdam is not that big.  There was a coffeeshop on almost every corner.  We stayed in the De Pijp area and it was really nice, there were coffeeshops and bars right down the road.  We walked A LOT, so I can tell you that you will find a great selection of bars and coffeeshops everywhere.

  5. i highly reccomend you stay at kattengatt.. whch is walking distance from all the happening places. i am staying at the rennaisance here and its simply been wonderful. all the cafes are close and the redlight area is like 10 minutes walk. the area is next to a canal and is supposed to be a good area. i highly reccommend rennaisance amsterdam at kattengatt

  6. That would be either Rembrandtplein or Leidseplein. Take your pick. But, as far as i know, all the hostels are in the Dam Square area, near Centraal Station, and not near the 2 areas i mentioned.

But you can easily get to those two squares by getting on a tram.
