if you are going to ride on the street all the time then i would recommend a mountain bike.

i ride one and have done for some years now. The only thing that you cannot really do is jumps.

In my mind a BMX is only good for riding at a skate park. Even if you want to ride street (jump off walls and things that you come across in the street) then you should buy a dirt jump bike.

i am going to buy one of those soon as they r more comfortable and faster and generally much more fun than a BMX i find.

It is important that you choose the right type of mountain bike. ther all alot of diffrent sorts E.G. cross country. or jump bike. Both of the listen two can b labeled as mountain bikes.

this is why it is important to know what you are going to use it for and there for you can find out what type to buy.

If you just want to "play" on a bike then a BMX.

If you want a more practical bike with the possibility of doing more than jumping off the kerb then get a Mountain Bike.

Mountain Bikes are much more versatile, however if jumps is what you are ultimately after mountain bikes get way too heavy for that stuff.

It depends what you are using it for....

If you want a bike to play about with and take down to the skatepark then yeah, go for a BMX.  If you want a durable, everyday use bike go for a mountain bike.  If you are riding purely on tarmac then go for a road/racing bike.

I'd recommend a mountain bike since they are the best all-rounder.

I'd suggest a mountain bike. Just so you know, unlike the guy above said, MTB are not for nerds, but BMX are for posers(unless of course you want to actually do tricks on them). There are lots of subdivisions of MTBs like dirt jumping, XC, DH, Freeride and so on.You should look around online to find the best type for you at places like:

one thing to keep in mind is that a "dirt jumping" bike basically feels like riding a big BMX bike, so you can take it to the park, the trails, or the jumps whenever.

Depends upon what sort of riding you do.  A BMX is OK for street use, but unless you want to work on your stunts, then the low saddle will work against you when attempting to do distance.  In any event, it will kill your knees.

The mountain bike is good for doing distances on. But, if you want something to throw around you local lanes and quarries quickly, but can also be used for general riding, go for the mountain bike.

Of the two, the mountain bike is more versatile.  On the other side of the coin, the bmx is great for teaching general riding skills.

So, what sort of riding to you want to do?

What are you going to use it for, Daily use or Extreme use. i would buy a BMX bike for street riding and such, and of course by a Mountain bike for rough ground and such like mountain terrian.

Depends what you want to use it for. If you want to do a lot of miles on the road get a hybrid like a Marin or if you want to do off road get a bmx or mountain bike....
