We have chopped it down to a smallish trunk (6ft), and dug out quite a lot of soil around it, but the trunk is so thick - is there an easy way of getting rid of the tree once and for all? Many thanks in anticipation.

  1. chainsaw/saw the trunk to a stump and then paint it with copper sulphate

  2. If you want to remove the tree, you have to dig under it and cut the taproot and the feeder roots. Home depot has a stump remover product that is used for disintegrating the stump if you don't want to dig it up . Cut the tree down as close to the ground as possible and drill holes in it, pour in the stump remover (granulated) and pour warm water in the holes. You have to water the stump periodically according to the instructions. The other option is to rent a stump grinder or hire someone who is in the business. I personally prefer to remove the stump by digging under it and cutting all the roots but it is a lot of work.

  3. I frequently have to use it I live on a hill and when the wind blows hard trees go down.  I buy mine a a discount store.

    Try this

    Revenge Stump Remover

    $6.50

Walmart and Lowes carry a similar one

  4. Traditional methods are to tie as tightly as you can a copper wire around the stump. the copper sets up a chemical reaction.

If possible you can burn as much as you can.

Drill holes and pour in Creosote if you can find it (not possible to buy it anymore)

Hire a large drill and drill as much as possible Like a compressor/road drill)

There are commercial products like "Stump Gone" but they are not all that good.

  5. You can hire a stump grinder, but its over £100 per day! You can use 'Deep Root' which will kill the tree, but it will take a few years before it rots enough to lift out. In the interim you could plant a decorative climber to cover it. An ivy or common jasmin would work.
