it depends. i like to use a big sucker on a hook and leave it out while i fish with a lure such as a spoon.

(1)winter: smelt or golden shinner

(2)spring :johnson silver minnow or banjo minnow

(3)summer; chubs, suckers,or troll a crank bait.

(4) fall: back to casting spoons

For live bait a big sucker minnow is tough to beat. For artificals A big husky jerk or most any rapala works quite well.
