  1. I know it might be frightening, but buying a separate receiver (big box with lots of spare connections), a separate set of speakers from a real speaker company and a separate DVD player is the better way to go.

Look into the Onkyo 505/605 receivers. These start at $400. Yamaha and Dennon are also some of the best, but Onkyo is packing a LOT of connections and features into their new models that you have to spend $1,000 or more for in a Denon or Yamaha unit.

Find a set of monitor-style speakers from a real speaker company like Polk, Klipsch, Energy, Boston, etc.  These start about $500 and go up to $1,500.  Get a separate, self-powered subwoofer.  You do NOT have to buy the same make subwoofer as the other speakers.

For a DVD player - get a lower end PS3. It is actually cheaper than most BluRay players, will play standard def DVD's and BluRay disks, and usually produces BETTER images than stand-alone players.

    HOME THEATER IN A BOX:

There are a few good ones by Denon and Yamaha. Just make sure the parts all look like they could be sold separatly. This means:

    - The receiver is a big, heavy box with lots of connectors on the back.

    - The subwoofer is self-powered/has an AC power cord

    - The speakers are small, wooden box's with spring clips or binding posts on the back.  If the "system" has the wires pre-attached to the speakers - run away

    - The DVD player (if included) is a separate box.

    Hope this helps.

  2. Boze surround sound

  3. I like Harmon Kardon recievers for their looks. The 745 and 645 recievers have a good amount of power. Yamaha, Denon, and Onkyo recievers are also good, and are reasonably priced.

As for the speakers go, I really like the sound of all Focal Audio speakers... and Martin Logan speakers sound great, and look amazing. There are many brands that are amazing. Bose is good, but these are better: Klipsch, Boston Acoustics, Polk Audio, Focal Audio, Martin Logan, etc.

Moving onto the DVD, as everyone else reccomends, I would get the PS3 as it will play Blu Ray movies, and standard DVD's. The PS3 costs just as much as Blu Ray and HD DVD players, but you also get the gaming console, which can add more fun to your home theater.

As for the costs, for a good reciever, with a good amount of power, prices would begin at about $1,000 for a Yamaha, and could easily surpass the $5,000 mark. The same goes for the speakers. You could buy a Bose 5.1 surround sound package for about $1,000, or you can go all out with a top of the line Focal speaker package which could cost you up to $40,000. PS3's start at $399, so its resonable, and other DVD systems could go past $1,000.

Honestly, you can get a really nice setup for about $2,000-$4,000. I am biased towards Focal and Martin Logans just because of personal experience with them. If you have access to them, check them out, because they do have speakers which are reasonably priced (Focal - Sib and Co - $1,400-$2,000 - 5 Speakers + Sub / or / Martin Logan - $2,000 - 2 Tower Speakers)

  4. um bose surround system is good for begnniners.

  5. Bose

  6. I have always been a fan of Onkyo products since the 90's i would recomand Onkyo HT-SP908 it is a Home Theater in a box 7.1 channel and up to date sound decodeing ready for blu ray players. With this product make sure your onkyo reciver in the setup menu you put the intelivolume all the way up good luck
