I plan to do VFR, maybe a 300 mile trip here and there, three to four seats. I don't want to die from an aeroplane crash.

  1. Cessna 172.  Hands down.

  2. Question is what is your budget?

Cessna 172 good single meets your requirements, but you are looking $35K for a decent one on the low end.

Cherokee 140/150/160 again meets your basic requirements you can find them in the mid $20K range and up.

Remenber both of these models will have limited useful load with full fuel to carry 4 large adults.

If you want to carry four adults and fuel you need to consider the Cherokee 180.  Can find a mid 60's airplane, VFR, with fair engine time around $40K

Whatever airplane you decide, make it part of the sale to have an independent mechanic do a pre-purchase inspection.  This will cost you a few hundred dollars, but can prevent serious expenses later from buying a lemon.
