  1. Before you buy cheap ask yourself "How much is my head worth"

  2. HJC makes a pretty nice helmet, and they are very easy on the wallet. ICON also makes so pretty nice helmets that come in under 200 bucks.

  3. Scorpion makes some nice decent helmets that are fairly affordable.

  4. Try a ''Bell'' brand... I always felt safe with one.

  5. As much as DOT certified is good to have. I would try to look for anything that is also Snell certified too. I mean is it worth being cheap when its your head. just my opinion.

PS and dont buy used helmets.

  6. All UK helmets must meet the minuimum requirement by law but "best" and "cheap" do not go together.

Buuy the best quality you can afford.  I wera Nolans they fall into the reasonably expensive bracket but if you want the best then look at Schubert or Arai.  There really is plenty to choose from and most stock a good range.

    Either way ride it safely

  7. What do you consider cheap?

    HJC makes an affordable helmet.

But you know the old saying...Put a 10 dollar head in a 10 dollar helmet.

If you're only getting one because your state or an adjoining state where you ride has a helmet law and you're only trying to meet the legal requirement, then OK.  Otherwise, I wouldn't skimp on a lid.

I always wear a helmet, but am a firm believer that it should be a choice not a law.

  8. I've smashed a few Nitro helmets, and I'm still riding bikes. I stand by them.

  9. Nitro make great helmets at very affordable prices.....I've got a caberg which is so comfortable to wear and cost approx £60

Any uk helmet has to be approved so they all are to a certain standard.

I'd say a budget of about £50 is a good start.

Never ever buy a second hand helmet though...and I wouldn't even contemplate Ebay. if a helmet is dropped its useless and who knows how it will be delivered to you or in what state.

Go to a good retailer and tell them your budget and they will sort you out with what you need.

  10. In the UK, all helmets have to comply with the EC22-05 regulations to be sold legally.

Some say that cheap does not mean good, this has been thrown into doubt lately with the government backed SHARP tests.

In this a £50 Lazer helmet performed better than a £400 Arai.

Some manufacturers of the more expensive helmets are now trying to discredit the testing despite having agreed the testing beforehand.

So some cheaper ranges have performed better than the more expensive and fashionable ones.

Try looking at Nitro helmets, especially the N1600 range some decent helmets with good graphics. also the N1710 finally a good graphic for a pretty good race helmet.

Try and find out what racers wear now or have worn in the past this might give you some kind of ideas.

  11. Nitro make some great lids at amazingly cheap prices.. Although if you dont buy direct from them they will be even cheaper.

Often a derogatory attachment to 'chavs' on mopeds, they are often looked down upon. But my first ever lid was a Nitro and it was no worse than my Shoei and Arai lids! Although, i have fortunately not had the misfortune to have to test them in the event of an accident, i can say for style, comfort and SAFETY, they are WELL worth it.

Proof? The newly-opened goverment website helmet safety website rates Nitro helmets, and many of them achieve 3 and 4 stars, the same as what Arai, HJC, Shoei, Shark and all the popular names are getting. Be sure to check whatever helmet you get as some can be a surprise.

The £30 Nitro can be rated 4-star, while the £300 Arai will be rated 2-star. Check for yourself..

To summarise, you can do ALOT worse than a Nitro lid for a starter helmet!

  12. KBC makes a good full face helmet that's Dot and Snell approved at a reasonable price I bought mine for $150.00 at cyclegear check there website Cyclegear.com

  13. Anything that is DOT certified is safe to ride with. Check out ebay, they have some good deals.

  14. All helmets have to meet a certain standard and as someone said in certain tests a Lazer beat an Arai. Id recommend going to a shop and trying on loads of helmets. The fit varies between manufacterers for instance Arais fit my head shape but Shoies dont. Id rather get a good fitting £30-£40 new helmet than a Arai off Ebay for £30 ( might of been destroyed in a crash and resprayed)
