  1. Your friend needs to get a clue. I also love the fact that you specificly asked about take downs and I think only one of the answers really addressed that. Styles that are noted for their take down ability are:

Judo- Devestating throws and very good ground submission skills.

Sambo- Almost the same as Judo.

Submission wrestling- More take downs then actual throws, but excellent ground fighting skills.

Hapkido- Well rounded art that includes striking , throws and take downs, and groun dfighting depending on the school.

BJJ- Rather weak take downs many times because most schools focus on the ground fighting aspect. It does have good throws and take downs but many schools don't train them enough.

Lesser known arts include Okinawin karate styles. They have many take downs and throws, however the goal in these is to take someone down and remain standing.

Any of the arts listed will give you what you are looking for, and I would recomend finding the best school you can, and don't worry so much about style, as long as it has what you want.

  2. Wow with a comment like "I was thinking about taking judo, but my friend told me that the excercises are g*y, like connecting arms and doing weird c**p."

This is my suggestion to you:  Stay away from martial arts.  That is a really p**s poor attitude to say about a form that you know nothing about.  Personally, I have never studied Judo.  However, I would never show disrespect for someone else's choice of study.

Oh by the way if you are new to martial arts everything would fall under "weird c**p" I guess since it will be things that you have never studied before.  Especially with some of the names they have.

For you I would suggest something like ballet.  It would probably fit your personality more.

  3. It depends on what you want out of it, really. Judo is very good if you want to disarm your opponent without a single blow. Taekwondo is very focused on kicking and giving '10 blows in one second', so to speak. Karate is good if you want something that is in between the two of those.

I'm biased of course, but I would recommend karate. It develops concentration and awareness, as well as keeping you physically fit and being a powerful martial art.
