The only OS support to go on the PS3 is Linux Yellow Dog and that is limited because it doesn't have full access to the cell.

Sure you can get other OSes on there, but it will just be emulators running in the Linux OS and very very slow, I mean super slow.

Yellow Dog is a Linux version for PS3. Sony just paid for it to be developed. HDTV required, 10GB of HDD goes under it. You can install Ubuntu and Kubuntu (better versions) as well as other members of Linux family. Note: in any case you'll need USB keyboard and mouse.
