GIMP - because it's free. It has all the functionality of photoshop, without the cost! Try it!

CS3 is the beast as its the newest.. every new relese is an upgraded version and they were relesed in order.

also if cs3 slows your computer i think it may be time for an upgrade :)

probably CS2 or CS because CS3 slows down your computer to much and there is no reason for why it is over 1GB when Photoshop 5.0 and under were under 15MB!

The best is always going to be the latest. It may possibly be bloated but it's always going to have more features/capabilities than previous versions. If you don't like CS3, then CS2 is your next best choice.

Photoshop CS2 or 7 were good. Anything lower, and you're asking for ghetto.
