on your starting journey, almost no water pokemon youll encounter so there's no worry for him since he's a fire type.

just try catching pokemon on your journey.

if you like attack and speed, then chimchar

if you like attack and defense; then turtwig

if you like a lot of resistance and nice Special attack; then Piplup.

I chose Chimchar for pearl and Piplup for diamond.

Well I Chose Chimchar. It's a really good pokemon to start off with. I also started the game with the other 2 pokemon to see which 1 was best and it was Chimchar. I Have Completed That Game And Once My Chimchar Had Evolved It Got Me Through The Pokemon League Really Easily.
