  1. Check out a refurbished Infocus SP4805 4X projector at amazon.com which sells for around $600. Here's the URL:

    http://www.amazon.com/InFocus-Screenplay...

It comes with a built-in speaker. Read the 15 Customer Reviews.

And here's an actual 96" diagonal movie image [A Good woman] from a distance of 13.5 feet.

    Good luck!

  2. I just picked up viewsonic pj503d new from ebay for around $350, high def xbox 360 goodness for me and my son.  I'm very happy with it. I got a great deal, but you can still find it in the 500 range or less.

I've got it setup with a 100" screen,  Lighting control is a must, daylight will ruin the experience, so make sure there is no windows, or heavy blinds,

the more natural light you have the more money you are going to have to spend to compensate, and even a super expensive projector will be faded out with sunlight.

remember sunlight is the enemy when it comes to projectors.

  3. Check out the reveiws at projector central. For under $1000 you'll be looking at 720p/1080i projectors. I have a 720p LCD projector and it looks amazing with high def sources.

The Optoma HD65 is about the best rated one under $1000. You may be able to find deals on some of the other in the top 10 list at Projector Central that list for slightly over $1000.

You will want to stay away from multimedia (or PC) projectors like the other answerer has mentioned. Their native resolutions are typically 4:3 ratio instead of the 16:9 ratio that is the HDTV standard.

The PJ503D's native resolution is 800x600 whereas something like the HD65's native resolution is 1280x720 (720p). 800x600 is actually less than 480p which is 854x480. The image would have to conform to the 800 pixels wide so you would end up with an image that's 800x451 pixels. The projector's internal processor would do the converting and in the conversion process you could get sampling artifacts (defects).

They may also only have a SVGA input and other basic inputs and not include an HDMI port.
