  1. I've always believed in getting the most for your budget - because if you end up with a cheap machine, or a crappy used or hand-me-down machine that wasn't well-maintained, you'll end up with a bad sewing experience and give up.

If you live near a sew-vac shop, it's best to sit down and test drive a few.  Let them know what kind of sewing you plan do to (fashion, quilting, alterations, etc.)   They'll usually have a selection of refurbished used machines, too.  They'll also show you how to thread your new machine and other basic features.

I just bought a new machine yesterday, and the other benefit of buying from a dealer is they generally offer good trade-up values when you buy from them.  So if you out-grow your machine in a year or two, they will give you a great trade-up offer on a higher end machine.  Definitely ask!  Some shops even offer price guarantees in case you find your machine for less somewhere else.

  2. Needle and thread....

  3. for a beginner?  Age?  How much do you want to spend?

Do you want one with all the bells and whistles or just the basics?

    more info would be helpful.

  5. Yup, agree with Sunny, you need to put more info on...One thing I will add is when you do decide to buy one, got to a sewing machine shop not a supermarket! There you can try before you buy and usually get a lesson on how to use the particular machine you want. Happy hunting! If you email me the area you live in (assuming it's UK) I can give you some shops to visit.
