  1. Varanasi (originally called Kashi) has a lot of historical importance.  There's a lot that you can learn/understand in Varanasi--the culture, history, religion, arts, music, and literature.

If you are interested in learning about the roots and branches of Hindi literature you may want to know that many of prominent philosopher originated from here, to name a few are--Jaishankar Prasad, Munshi Premchand, Kabir---in fact these are pillars of Hindi language literature. Well, If you are really a music enthusiast you may want to know that eminent names such as Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia and Ustad Bismillah Khan are associated with this oldest living city.

Ayurveda (ancient system of medicine) is said to be originated from Kashi.

Not to mention that religion, especially Hinduism and Buddhism, is one big thing that can be learned from Benaras (Varanasi). Gautama Buddha gave his first sermon from Saranath (a place near Varanasi). Its the only city mentioned in Rigveda.

Since a long long time Varanasi has been a center for learning Sanskrit and Astrology. Benaras Hindu university (BHU---central university, founder:  Pt. Madan Mohan Malivya),  departments of Sanskrit and astrology, offer many programs and courses for the same.

In fact BHU itself is a beautiful campus to visit.

In general, Varanasi has many things to offer---world famous Benarasi Sarees (apparel made of pure silk and gold/silver and woven by hands), carpets, Benarasi paan (betel leaves), jalebi (indian funnel cake), Ganges ghats (it has nearly 100 ghats/river banks), Bazaars, beautiful ancient temples, for e.g. Kashi Vishwanath mandir, Manas mandir, Sankat Mochan mandir, new Vishwanath Mandir (called Birla Mandir---in BHU campus), etc. In a nutshell, history of Varanasi, all the myths and mythology related to it, and its origin  is itself very interesting and informative to know. So get started!!
