Question:

Whats the best thing to wear under figure skates?

Does it matter what kind of tights you wear? Is there really a difference between figure skating tights and dance tights? Also is there a company that makes knee highs for figure skating?

I'm just curious because I'm still experimenting with what to wear...I have tried my dance tights, think knee highs, and just everyday socks so far.

  1. Tights are probably best to wear in skates.  Socks can cause friction, resulting in blisters and not necessarily keeping your feet any warmer.  Skating tights are probably a little thicker and more durable than dance tights.  I believe Mondor makes knee highs as well as many varieties of tights.  Mondor also makes a thicker tight for skating, which skaters just usually refer to as "Mondors."  They're much thicker and fuzzier than regular tights and most skaters wear regular tights with the fuzzy Mondors over them.  These come with or without feet or as sturrips.  When I'm skating, I usually wear a full pair of tights with either Mondors over them or over-the-boot tights over them.

    Try rainbosports.com.

    Good luck!

  2. i think its up to you. i have both skate and dance tights and they both seem to look the same :P als i've seen people around just wearing normal everyday tights, tho i dont know how long these would last if you fell on some rough ice.

its really up to you. maybe ask some skaters what they use and whether they prefer a certain type/brand. as long as you are comfortable then i dont think it matters too much for practicing.

  3. Well you've already tried dance tights so you could buy skating tights and see if there is a difference. I've never taken dance so I don't know, but my guess is they are thinner and might not keep you as warm.

Socks are good but usually for public skaters.

  4. thin white (or whatever color) tights and think short socks are the best combo i think. it always looks good and comfy at the same time. =]

  5. well u would use just regular skating tights. u can get lots of different types though such as ones that have a foot, ones that attach on the outside of your skate and etc. u should get ur skate heat molded so it fits ur foot properly though. and only wear tights that are skin colour

  6. socks?

  7. Figure skate tights are thicker than regular and dance tights.  It's a lot warmer and more durable for falls on the ice!

Keep experimenting until you find what's right for you . . . everyone has different preferences.  But I will say:

*Dance tights alone may not keep you warm.

*Don't wear thick socks if you intend to go back to tights because it will eventually make the inside of your boot roomier.  If you wear thick ones a lot and switch back to the thin stuff, you might find your foot sliding around a lot in the boot.  So watch out even with your everyday socks - whatever that may be.

    What worked for me:

Footless dance tights underneath for warmth.  2 skating tights restricted my movement.  But the dance tights were great for extra warmth and it held up well for washes.

Footless skating tights over the dance tights.  Whatever brand (I had them all).  I put the bottom over the top of my boots.

But for competitions/tests, I used the over-the-boot ones because I was too lazy to polish - hee hee.  Still I wore footless dance tights underneath.  The over-the-boot tights cover everything so nicely - it didn't matter what I wore underneath them.

But in all cases, I wore plain ol cheap knee hi's that you buy like 6 pairs in a box.  I never actually wore them to the knees, I just scrunched them down towards the boot.  I didn't want knee high lines on my leg.  I also wore silopads (which was before bunga pads and bunga sleeves were around) . . . and the knee highs kept them in place.  And that's also why I used the footless tights . . . so I can situate the pads down below directly.

You can buy knee highs for figure skating - as pinksk8ergal mentioned, they are from Mondor.

I didn't need warmth for my foot - so warmth was not an issue - the cheapies did me just fine!

Just my 2 cents.  Best of luck finding your tights formula!!

  8. I wear tights. (Brown.) But also over the tights I wear an extra set just for warmth. But I also have these amazing gel sock things that go over your ankle so your ankle won't hurt with your new skates! Usually you would get these for the higher levels, maybe starting with the axel. I am now working on doubles but I find these very good.
