  1. The Thoroughbred has been the most well-respected of all the horses that race, for centuries.  However, quarter horses and standard breds are great racehorses as well.

But the Kentucky Derby is THE horse race -- and that race is run by Thoroughbreds.

  2. The one that wins.

  3. One that wins on any going at any distance on the flat and over the jumps.

  4. The Thoroughbred is a horse breed best known as a racehorse. .

The Thoroughbred as it is known today was developed during the 17th and 18th centuries in England when English mares began to be crossbred with imported Arabian stallions. All modern Thoroughbreds can trace their pedigrees to 27 or 28 stallions and 74 foundation mares.

  5. American Thoroughbred

  6. Jesse stole my answer... I was gonna say the type that wins.

But it depends on what you mean by type...

If you're considering what breed is the best racehorse, then it depends on what type of race... Quarter Horses are the fastest horses over short distances.  they're the best sprinters.  Arabians are bred to race over long distances... the Arabian would be the likely winner in a cross country race.  Thoroughbreds are the most common breed of racehorse in the world.  They run medium-distance races.

Within thoroughbreds, there's different types of racehorses... different horses do better at different distances.  Some thoroughbreds are sprinters and run less than a mile, some TBs are better at a mile, some TBs are better over a little longer distance.  The classic distance is about 1 1/8 - 1 1/4... that's the most common distances of the big races in the US.  the triple crown races and BC Classic are run at those classic distances (well the Belmont is 1 1/2... there's not too many 1 1/2 races other than that).

And within any category of race, there's still different types of horses.  Some horses like to run fast from the start and some horses like to trail the other horses until the stretch and then run by everyone to get to the finishline first.  So long as it wins, it doesn't really matter what type of strategy the horse likes to have in the race [unless its strategy is to knock the other horses down to keep the lead! ;o) ].

  7. one that has four legs and runs like h**l

  8. Thoroughbreds are the main type of racehorse, although Quarter horses and Arabians can also be used for racing.

The thoroughbred is a man made breed with all Thoroughbreds in the world tracing their ancestry back to one of three stallions (not 27 as someone else stated): the Godolphin Arabian, the Darley Arabian and the Byerly Turk.

These stallions were mated with English mares and the thoroughbred was born.

Thoroughbreds race over a wide variety of distances, from 5f (just over half a mile) to over 4 miles.

In America very few races are run over more than a mile and a half (the ideal distance for a Thoroughbred - why do you think the Epsom Derby (the original Derby I might add!) is run over this distance?), but in Europe there are a wide range of races run over further - the Ascot Gold Cup, The St Leger, the Prix du Cadran are some of the highly regarded long distance races.

National Hunt, or jump, races are run over distances varying from a mile and half to 4 miles plus.
