  1. Don't buy anything. You will not get to drive anywhere for the first 6 weeks anyway.

You will not need a ride there for the first year. Only pay cash if you buy anything. Nothing in life is certain.

  2. You will be better off with a car.  You won't be able to use a motorcycle until you have at least finished basic training and what ever school you need for your specialty.

You are not allowed any vehicle while in basic training.  You may be allowed a car at school, depending on the branch of service and base.

Once you reach your final base, you can get a bike.  As in some previous answers, wait because you don't want to have to store your bike for years because you got assigned some place where you can not have a bike.

Motorcycles are a pain in the military.  There are many extra rules that you must follow, both on and off base.  Not all of these rules are so bad.  You will be required to take a motorcycle safety course and pass a test every year to get the sticker to allow your bike on base.  You must wear a helmet at all times, even if the local laws allow riding without a helmet.  You wil be required to wear a reflective vest at all times, even off base.

Remember that once you sign the contract and take the oath, the military owns you.  They have say so on what you do on and off base.  The consequences of not following their rules can be quite harsh.

  3. "They have VERY strict rules about operating a motorcycle on base. You are required to wear a helmet with goggles or a face shield, you are required to have every body part covered (no shorts, no T-shirts, and yes, you must wear gloves) and you're required to wear boots or high-tops when you ride. On top of that, you're required to wear a reflective vest or a jacket with reflective tape on it, even during the day."

    GOOD THING!!!

too many potential organ doners out there already

even without being military you will not catch me riding without full protective gear

no Sir, not even in >100 degree weather

    is hot asphalt more forgiving?

    back to the original question:

if you need cheap transportation and are willing to sacrifice some comfort gat a mc, not sure which Ninja you talk about,  the 250 will do for more comfort you might want to look into a little bigger displacement dual-sport bikes, still lightweight, no intimidating power, simple technology most of them are cheap and a lot of aftermarket accessories are available, think saddlebags for your daily commuter

  4. I would wait till I got out if boot and saw where they were sending me. A ninja would not do you any good in Point Barrow  Alaska.

  5. Car first. You don't know where you will be stationed and likely have to move frequently. What if you're assigned to Oregon? Rains more than half the year. Riding the the rain is worse that the worst. Also for the same reason cars are easier to sell say if you go overseas for any time.

  6. You'll not need one in Afghanistan or Iraq.

  7. A word of warning about riding a motorcycle on a military installation:  They have VERY strict rules about operating a motorcycle on base.  You are required to wear a helmet with goggles or a face shield, you are required to have every body part covered (no shorts, no T-shirts, and yes, you must wear gloves) and you're required to wear boots or high-tops when you ride.  On top of that, you're required to wear a reflective vest or a jacket with reflective tape on it, even during the day.

If you have no problem following all those rules, you may want to consider a motorcycle over a car just because the operating cost will be cheaper.  Just bear in mind the motorcycle will only haul you around.  One advantage of having a car is you can haul your stuff around pretty easily.  So if you're thinking you might need to transport people other than yourself or personal items, you might want to get a car.

  8. you should get a toyota with a cannon on the roof

  9. Just going in?

Better off with no wheels and cash in the bank.

You don't get to bring a vehicle to boot camp, and no one knows where you go next (unless you got guaranteed orders, and that aint always true). You get to leave it home, or in storage. Nice thing about military bases, they always have public transportation nearby.

To ride a bike on base, you gotta have protective gear plus.

  10. go with the bike, especially in a temperate climate...
