Question:

Whats the best way to combat anxiety?

I only get it in social situations like crowded places etc.

The only solution I have when I feel this is to take one or two tranquillisers(I "borrow" them off my friend,only he has a go at me for that as he is a diagnosed schizophrenic and has them calm down in emergencies)along with a few drinks.I dont know what else to do as I cant let stress control what I can and cannot do.I am not mad and have no mental illness BTW.

  1. Believe it or not you ARE normal. Everybody experiences social anxiety at some point. For you though, it has been the focus of your attention for so long you are waiting for it to happen. And the More you wait for anxiety the more likely it is to rear it's ugly head.

    Cognitive behavioural therapy will help you deal with this. Ask your G.P for a referral.

    Exersice before a situation that usually causes anxiety is VERY beneficial. The endorphins released will counteract the adrenaline you usually have in social situations.

    I started out taking prozac 20mg daily.. then it dropped to 10mg and now I am just taking 5mg and still doing very well. I might be considering taking medication off my life.

    If these recur he'll prob give you a course of beta-blockers which will stop the panic attacks.

    Don't take other people's medication, especially with drink, that's a really stupid thing to do and you know it.

    Go to the doctor.

    Do it.

Never, ever take pills prescribed for anyone else, it's lethal.  If taking a number of deep breaths and convincing yourself 'I can do this' does not work then see you Dr for a check up and diagnose your problem properly. It is not good to self diagnose and get it wrong.  SEE YOUR DR!  Hope you take advice..

Anxiety is something just like diabetes or high blood pressure.  You need to deal with it ASAP.  My opinion is to see a doctor and then see a counselor.  I used to get drunk because of anxiety and ended up an alcoholic.  you can get short-term medication from a doctor that will calm you down and then discover what the issue is behind the anxiety through counseling.
