  1. It is definitely better to use an itinerary than to the the tickets separately.

  2. I would see if there is some type of tour package that you can buy.  The tour company may receive some type of discount which they may pass along to you.

  3. If you book far enough in advance Southwest Airlines is the cheapest way to fly and they go to most big cities or common areas.

  4. I am not aware of any particular fare that is around the USA. I suggest that you do some thinking about what you would like to see, and not go about this willy-nilly. The USA is the same size as Australia or Europe, and there is a lot to see, with many cities. New York City and Washington, DC could occupy a traveler for weeks, and Boston also has a lot to see. Chicago, Detroit, Omaha, Kansas City, Cleveland, St. Louis, New Orleans, Atlanta all have interesting things to do and to see, and you haven't gotten half-way yet.

You could fly into Boston, take the Metroliner into New York, then on to Washington on the Metro, fly to Atlanta, fly to New Orleans, train to Dallas or fly to Chicago, fly to Denver, train to the west coast, and train or car to the north or south. The possibilities are endless.

  5. You're referring to a flight pass; they're not cheap when you consider the point-to-point prices.  Define "possible."  What's your budget, time limits, time of year, must-sees?  The cheapest tickets are the $9-style tickets that Spirit has sometimes, and Allegiant's $29 fares, but those airlines don't fly everywhere.  Also consider Megabus--some trips for only $1.50!  Links below....
