  1. On short chips I think it is key to have some good hand action.  You just need to spin the ball - you want to hit it so the ball rolls up the face of the club a little allowing those mac daddy grooves to work their magic.

  2. One of the hardest things in golf is learning the proper motion through the ball on short shots, ie; chipping, pitching, or bunker play.

There is a lot of miss information out there about "playing the ball back in your stance and hitting down on it, and take a divot!" Unfortunately this causes golfers all kinds of issues by forcing the leading edge of the wedge to knife into the ground (very unreliable. I've seen golfers time and time again take HUGE divots out of the ground on a 40yd. pitch shot! A big no-no. ), rather than "thumping" the ground w/ the bounce of the wedge (when executed properly a pitch shot should never leave so much as an indentation on the ground).

For sake of brevity work hard on trying to "slap" the ground with the sole of your wedges. Again folks, if you are taking divots when you execute a pitch then you are using POOR technique. You might get away with it but a much more effective method of chipping/pitching is to rely on the bounce of your wedges leaving virtually no mark on the ground.

    Good Luck!!!!!!!!!

  3. Why does everyone want check and backspin ? What ever happened to bump and run or chip and run? These are much easier shots to perform and they do not require five hours a day practice. They do require the ability to read greens, the degree of slope, the grain and the speed. Too many want to emulate those professionals who make their living at this game with neither the talent, the mental strength or the devotion to practice. Tools do not a golfer make.

  4. I agree that playing the ball back in your stance helps you trap the ball and hit down on the ball, and you also need to make sure that you are accelerating through the ball creating backspin.

  5. You have to hit down on the ball to get the proper spin.  Use a ball that has a high spin rate like the Nike One Platinum or Black.

  6. taylormade rac wedges and nike sv wedges produce more spin than any of the CG series of Cleveland wedges.  And the club isnt what makes the ball check up, its the way you strike it.  A good player can stop a ball with a WalMart wedge, so unless you learn how to hit the ball to make it spin and check, youre wasting your money.  If thats the only thing you are trying to accomplish, go see a teaching pro, they will SHOW you how to do it and adjust your chipping technique so you will accomplish the same.  Practice

  7. You might need to play the ball further back in your stance. Essentially, you want to trap the ball between the club and the turf to create spin, so make sure you're hitting down on it and not scooping it.

Edit: I didn't say it was that simple, nor did I tell him to take a divot.

  8. put the ball on your back foot.

    lean foward.

come down steep on the ball.

watch the ball hit the green,

check up, and go in the hole.
