  1. open a roth ira, I recommend an online brokerage firm that has good beginner qualitys {like tutorials or an easy to understand set up}, i use zecco, better then schwab, etrade, etc. they are the only ones with free stock trades, no minumums..all the others will charge you fees for trading, but compare and see for yourself. Good luck and happy investing!

  2. Go to Vanguard and look for bond funds based on no taxes

  3. What sort of tax?

Remember an ISA is not tax efficient for IHT.

  4. I concur with the answers that state Roth IRA, but if you do not qualify for a Roth IRA--do not have earned income--then the next best way to invest in a tax effective way is through an equity index fund.  An equity  index fund holds a wide variety of stocks with very little realized capital gains because the stocks are not replaced often.  One that you might consider is  Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund.

  5. Once you have figured out how to make money investing, the most tax effective way to do that in the USA is a Roth IRA account.  Contributions are after tax and never taxed again (can be withdrawn at any time), and gains are never taxed unless drawn out before age 59.5.
