Buy a ferret (a pair really). Find somebody with a ferret that will give you used bedding to place around the outside of your house. Rapair holes in walls and possible entranceways and keep a clean house.

You need to make sure you don't have anything in your house that will attract them.

Get rid of piles of wood or junk outside your house. Don't stack anything against the side of your house. Don't leave pet food or water sitting around outside. Use rodent-proof bird feeders and don't feed squirrels if you have a rodent problem. Keep your lawn and plants trimmed back and tidy. Keep your garbage sealed in a rodent-proof container.

Keep them from getting inside your house. Repair any damaged siding or roof. Seal up holes around your windows, doors, pipes, and drainage. Replace torn screens and broken glass.

Make sure the inside of your house is also clean. Check your attic and closets frequently to make sure no one has taken up residence. Seal up your food in plastic or metal containers instead of leaving things in the cardboard packaging. Keep laundry in hampers instead of piles on the floor. If you have other pets, don't free-feed them or leave their food sitting out.

If you DO get rats in your house, the first way to get rid of them is to eliminate whatever they are after, whether it's food or shelter. If you have a pet dog, cat or ferret, praise them if they catch any of the rats.

The second way is to harass them. Leave lights on in the rooms where they are hiding or play a stereo constantly.

The third way is to trap them. The best traps to use are the traditional snap traps. Glue traps are totally inhumane, and poison can be dangerous to other pets or wild animal. Some people might tell you to get a live-trap and catch them alive, but that's cruel when it comes to rats. You might be able to catch them alive, but you would have to release them in a new area far away and since rats dont accept newcommers to their colonies, they would be attacked or starve to death. Is kinder to just kill them.

Also, talk to your neighbors. If you have a rat problem, they do too. And everyone near you will also have to take these precautions.

Ok to keep rats out of your house you can first keep the floors food free so the rats cant live off your food. Its good to clean the house use Lysol it has chemicals that in the long run can make rats go away. You could get traps to capture them if there are lots usually they hide in dark moist places.

a cat would solve your problem or a jack russel terrier, mine loves to hunt small animals, its easier then poisons and junk but thats my opinion

You can always set up traps near areas you have seen them- this is probably the best way. Moth balls are a myth when in keeping mice away, because rats and mice adapt to smells quickly: they also will adapt and learn quickly of rat poison. You  might get lucky with one or two ingesting the toxic poison, but the only problem with rat poison is that you might have a decomposing pest lodged somewhere in your home without being able locate it.

The best exterminator is a cat. A cat will bring you all the dead mice it catches, and scare them away at the same time.

Also, if you live in a town home, condo, or apartment- it will be pretty hard to keep the pests away because not all people keep their houses too clean.

close up any access from outside to inside because they go from in a house to outside every day. Buy traps after that and put them where you see rats or their droppings. so the ones outside cant come in and the one inside can be killed.
