1) Start with a good car. It's best to buy American, but if you *must* have an import, get a good one like a Volvo, Jaguar, BMW, or Mercedes.

Avoid Japanese, Korean and VWs at all costs, these are just cheap throw away cars that aren't built to last. They are built to sell. And they're not safe either.

2) Always check your fluids. This really is the #1 most important thing you can do over anything else no matter what the vehicle.

3) Stay on top of your regular maintenance. Make sure all the filters are changed, not just the oil filter. Often the fuel and air filters are neglected.

4) Use OEM (dealer) replacement parts. The cheap junk you get at CSK (Kragens), won't last near as long as OEM.

5) Drive the care conservatively, if you take it easy on the brakes and gas it'll make the car last longer and you'll save $$ at the pump.

check it offen.... change the oil more than ever 3000 miles do everything you should do before it needs it... best two things is change the oil more and replace air filter more

Performing required maintenance at the specified intervals and only using quality parts.  Saving yourself 2 dollars on a chinese made parts could cost you more down the road.
