Whats the best way to learn how to play the guitar without a teacher?

I want to learn how to play the acoustic guitar but I can't afford a teacher. I was wondering how I could teach myself. I'm really music stupid and know nothing about playing a musical instrument but I really want to learn. Does anyone know any good books that could teach me or any websites? I really seriously know nothing about playing the guitar so I really need help.

Hi Brittany

Start by playing a few chords and learning them by heart. THen, learn some simple scales to go with the chords you have learnt.

The best way to practice your rhythm and timing is by playing along with your favorite CD or albums. Not east at first but if you don't start, you won't get anywhere.

Practice 45 min a day on a daily basis is good enough to begin with.

Go on you tube and check out the tutorials although I doubt there are any for beginners.

I would go to your local music store and buy some kind of dvd/book. I would pick something that you would want to play. There are Blues,Jazz,Rock,Metal and Alternative styles you can learn. I would also learn how to read guitar tablatures. Then you go to ultimate guitar tabs.com and start learning some songs. Just go to yahoo and put guitar tabs. It should come up. Hope this helps. If you need some help I will be more than happy to help you. I have been playing guitar for 11 years now so I kind of know what I'm doing. : )

maybe look at tutorials on youtube. :) They have people who teach guitar there, so it's as if you're have lessons without paying at all.

Search itunes for "learn guitar" and there should be a decent FREE podcast-y type thing there which is useful. Once you know the absolute basics its just a matter of practicing songs (look them up on any of the 1000s of tab websites) until you improve.
