I've just come back from the Greek Islands and have a dream of sailing a boat around the islands in a few years time. I know I can join flotillas which I guess would be good experience but I really want to start to learn to sail properly. Whats the best way to start? I live about a hour from Southampton.

  1. use a sail boat

  2. Try sailing school for courses and go to evening classes for navigation over the winter. Check out the RYA for a list of courses near you. Some of the Sailing magazines have people advertising. Try Yachting Monthly you can get it at Smiths. A lot of people will stop sailing for the winter soon but you could contact local sailing clubs to see if any one needs a crew and would be willing to take a beginner. Offering to help with expenses like food may help. Remember to ask how much experience the skipper has himself as any old fool can buy a boat (and many do!). You need to sail with someone who knows what they are doing. Our tidal and cold waters can and have been a death trap.  Good luck and have fun xx

  3. A sailing school is best and living near Southampton, it shouldn't be difficult for you to find one.  If you visit the link below, they have a directory of all the sailing schools in the UK and I believe there are a number in Hampshire.

  4. I'd start off in small boats.  Go on an RYA start sailing course, there'll be loads in Southampton.  The principles are the same whatever your size of boat but it's easier to learn and find courses with dinghies.

After that/at the same time, try and find someone to crew for in order to gain experience in different weather conditions and locations.  You could look in Yachting Monthly or a similar magazine.  Alternatively, if you join a sailing club with a yachting section, there will probably be organised events and they'll help you find a boat to go on.

Flotillas are good but they can be quite regimented.  If you're looking to learn to sail quickly, finding an experienced helm to crew for will help you learn faster and your general knowledge and technique will be better.

  5. Try a boat.
