Question:

Whats the best way to prepare a bottle of formula for a newborn

I'm being induced on Monday! Since I have only a few days I want to be fully prepared. What's the best way to prepare a bottle of formula for a newborn, since they require so many feedings in one day? Is it easier to:

1. buy gallon jugs of purified water and keep at room temperature, and simply mix formula in and feed?

2. Microwave the purified water in a separate container then pour into a bottle to mix formula (this way it's warmer than room temp but doesn't have hot spots)

3. Is tap water okay to use? (I drink it out of the tap, tastes fine and is clean)

4. Wouldn't boiling water in a pan to simmerse the bottle to warm it up take too long?

Any other suggestions???

  1. We have used tap water for bottles since our little one was born.  I would ask your pediatrician (you have one, right?) if the tap water in your city is safe.  If you use bottled water then make sure you tell your pediatrician because your baby will need supplements to replace the fluoride and things that are in the tap water, but not in bottled water.

If you use tap water then it's easy to just mix it as you need it.

As far as warming a pre-mixed bottle goes, we received a bottle warmer as a gift.  It's one that hangs over your faucet and you run the hot water until the bottle is warm.  I wouldn't use a microwave.  It really doesn't take that long.

I searched for the bottle warmer that we have and I can't seem to find it, but I found that you can get warmers that are pretty inexpensive, or you can just run hot water over the bottle in the sink.

You don't need to put the bottle in boiling water to warm it up.

  2. My babys liked it when the formula was warmer than room temp. so I used to put it in the microwave for a couple seconds then shake it up. I would just stick to bottled water because you never know whats in ground water these days better to be safe than sorry. Eventually you will get into your own routine once you have done it a couple times.Good luck!!

  3. 1. well purified water isn't usually sterilized which is what you are recommended to use, i did just use ordinary bottled water though, your choice

    2. if you are going to try sterilizing th water in the microwave i should guess this method would work, of course making sure to test the temp once it's in the bottle... though for warming i bought a bottle warmer, i cant recall which kind but it worked fine

    3. well i never used tap water unless it was filtered, i also won't drink it myself unless filtered it always tastes funny to me otherwise

    4. again i went with a bottle warmer, but i only warmed his bottles if they came out of the fridge, if i was making them with room temperature water i wouldn't warm tehm, and believe me if your baby will take them that way it makes having to give him a bottle while you are out of the house soooooooooo much easier

  4. do not microwave, you cant tell the temp of the bottle well enough and it can scald the baby. this is dangerous. i would use tap water or purified water. if you use tap, make it luke warm. good luck on being a mommy!

  5. I personally have always used tap water for the bottles.  During the day I usually run the tap until it is a little warmer than room temp and fill the bottle.  That way you're not waiting around for a bottle to heat up cause it does take a while and when your little one is hungry it's hard to hear them cry for that long.  At night I line up a few bottles with the water already in them so it's easier for me to just dump in the powder, shake and go.  The water is room temp, but I figure that's a good thing cause not everywhere you go are you going to be able to warm up a bottle.

  6. I USE NURSERY WATER ITS PURIFIED AND HAS FLOURIDE IN IT..WE BOUGHT A MIXING PITCHER BY DR. BROWNS AND WOULD MAKE ABOUT 24 OZ TO STORE IN FRIDGE. THEN I WOULD POUR MAYBE THREE BOTTLES TO HAVE THEM READY IN THE FRIDGE FOR WHEN THE BABY WAS READY TO EAT..WE ALSO BOUGHT A BOTTLE WARMER IT TAKES ABOUT 1 MINUTE TO WARM(DADDY DIDN'T LIKE THE BOTTLES IN THE MICROWAVE) AND BEST PRODUCT WE BROUGHT WAS A MICROWAVE BOTTLE STERILIZER..

  7. no TAP FOR your little baby unless you have some filtration device w/ reverse osmosis....

Your not to heat water in a bottle, although I know people that do...so ya..we just get a glass liquid measuring cup..measure out (well for your newborn)- measure about 2 - 4 oz.  than pour that inbottle..do your scoop for 2 oz or 2 scoops for 4 oz's , and shake er up.  We microwaved for about 15 seconds...might vary on ur microwave...now were up t o 8 oz...so we micro for 36 seconds lol.   If waters not an issue..you can get the ready to go formula you put in fridge...heat up form in a measuring cup, and pour into bottle.  GOOD LUCK TO YOU!

EDIT---HERES THE BACK UP FOR THE NOTTTT USING TAP WATER.....http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=5...

  8. ABSOLUTELY NO WARM TAP WATER!! NO NO  NO!  What is so hard about boiling the tea kettle and then using it after it cools? that way the baby is still getting the flouride  he needs. bottled water is not usually sterile. If u must use tap water in an emergency its better to use cold water than warm water, as warm water can have all kings of bugs(germs) in it, not to mention the lead.
