They drive CRAZY over there. Taxi is safer because the driver is more experienced. Visit tripadvisor.com

taxis are the best way to get around in jamaica since the drivers know practically every where and most of the times know of every single session, leisure activity, party etc that u or most tour companies and hotels probably dont know of.

Feel free to ask them - they can take u anywhere you want at anytime.

Oh God no...don't rent a car and attempt to drive over there!  

I agree with the previous poster - they're crazy drivers and that's coming from someone who speeds on a daily basis.  Don't get me wrong, I kinda enjoy being driven around there...its uhhhh, well, an "adventure" to say the least :-D

The previous answers are correct assuming you are on the island for a short time and won't do a lot of driving around.  If you stay at a resort they will have a list of recommended taxi drivers that will help insure your safety.  The resort will usually make the call and have the taxi waiting for you.  They are also a great source of information about the island.

From all of the reviews I have read about Jamaica, most all taxi drivers will charge at least $120 US to take you ANYWHERE. I would use public transit if at all possible (more authentic anyways) Often your hotel can arrange for yuo to rent a car for $80 a day from Budget rentals (yes they're over there too) Good providence!

Well we drive on the left side of the road down here and also we have some crazy *** drivers on the road the other thing is, we  have narrow whiney, whiney roads, some with lots of potholes.

Pros and Cons Of Taxi:

Pros: -someone that knows the area driving you.

          

Cons  -Taxi's can be unsafe

             you may be cheated interms of overcharging

             Commute can be difficult at times e.g late at night

Pros and Cons of renting

Cons  - unable to manipulate the road

          

Pros - own convenience,

the best solution would be to merge the better qualities of the two. it wold be fun to rent but have someone familiar with the island and the area take you around LOL.
