Whats the best way to waterproof the bottom of a canoe

me and my dad are new to canoeing and we bought a used canoe in good condition but some of the paint on the bottom is chipped and we were wondering if we have to waterproof the canoe or if its fine as it is

P.S. what would we use on the bottom to waterproof it

Try "painting" it with clear polyurethane after cleaning it with steel wool to get a clean, dry surface. Two or three light coats are better than one heavy coat.
