I recommend you choose your networking medium for your devices in this order:

Ethernet

Powerline

WIFI

Ethernet is going to be your fastest.  This would involve plugging your video game console right into the router.  Sometimes it doesn't work good because you would have to run the cable over the floor where people are walking on.

The next solution is powerline.  With powerline devices, you turn your electrical outlets into the the transmission medium.  It is just about as easy to setup as ethernet.  There is a security concern if you are in an apartment, complex, or town home.  Setting up security is super easy.  You just enter in a password rather than taking 4 steps to protect your network like you do with wifi.

If ethernet and powerline does not work, then I suggest wifi.  Sometimes you want to connect your ipod and listen to songs on your hard drive on one of your computers while you run on your treadmill.  In that case, it is probably inconvienient to have yourself plugged into a wall outlet while you are running on the treadmill.  This is a case where you need wireless.

The moral of the story is, use cables when ever it seems reasonable enough to do so.  Wires have less latency than wireless.  This especially comes into play when you are doing online gaming.

I would suggest that you look around at different routers to see if you can find one that you like.

Once you have one, you should plug your modem into your router and then you can either plug your computers into your router using an Ethernet cord or you can access your network wirelessly.

If your computers don't have built in wireless cards, you're probably going to have to purchase one. There are also USB network adapters that you can buy that you can plug into a USB port that enable you to access your network.

Wireless N will give you the best speed and range.  There are instructions that will come with it and it will explain how to hook up that specific router.
