I'm thinking of having a sailboat and I need something for fun and to stretch my body, so I think sailing will be the right thing cause playing video games all the time is quite harmful. on the tv if there's only one person sailing, then the sailboat is quite small, it has only one mast, one sail and a jib. but are there bigger sailboats for one person? I was also thinking if are there any automated sails? when a small machine would be pulling all the ropes and stuff, so one person could sail a bigger sailboat with many sails and jibs? I'm really new to sailing, so I dont know all the details of how all the stuff actually works.

I found this, looks like there's only one person sailing, so could one person sail something bigger than this or is this already enough? I grew up on a farm, so to be more active isnt really a big deal for me.

  1. a rubber one you shouldnt fish in it though your  hooks could do some damage

  2. go straight for a 44ft Bavaria, or maybe an Oyster 65!

or maybe you'll probably be better with a GP14 for a year or 2.

  3. Let’s make this simple.

The first thing you need to do is to learn how to sail.  You can crew on a sailboat for a while and learn a lot.  You could take a sailing course or just buy a little second hand dinghy and get out there.  I would STRONGLY recommend the first two, before the last one.  You need to be safe and know your limitations.  The sea is a hard teacher and it treats all people the same way.  It does not give you a break if you are new.

The best way to learn how to sail is on a dinghy.  A dinghy will let you know (very quickly) if you are doing something wrong and it will reward you if you are doing right.  The physics or laws of sailing are the same no matter how small or big the boat it (within reason).

I was cruising the net a while ago I found a little sailboat that you can build yourself for about $100.  The thing is not fast or pretty, but you can learn the basics.  It is called the PD Racer and it kind of looks like fun.  If I did not have two sailboats, I might build one of these things just for fun.

Anyway, think of your first boat like your first car.  It was not the best thing in the parking lot, but it got you around.  After a while, you moved on to something better.  If you think along those lines, you should be alright.  You also need to think about the body of water you are going to be sailing in and how you are going to transport it.

  4. I've heard of solo sailers on 90 foot trimarans doing circumnavagation races.    Start out small so the cost isn't much, then get a bigger one when you decide its for you.

  5. To be honest that boat in the picture looks like a bathtub...  It is very wide for it's length which is nice if you need to have room down below.

It sounds like you want this sailboat for recreation, so I would suggest a different style like a C&C...  A 24-32' (8-10m) boat will be what you would like...  look at this one: http://www.cnc-yachts.com/for_sale/user_...

The sails on this would be easily handled by one person, although it would be wise to go sailing first with someone who has experience if you do not.

Also an autopilot or a way to lash the helm down so that the boat sails straight while you raise or lower sails makes life easy.

And sailing is easy as you gain more experience...  the "rope" starts in one place and ends in another, all you have to do is follow that path.

    Hope this helps!

  6. Next month there will be a singlehanded race across the Atlantic Ocean. Look it up. It is called the Artemis Transat.  There will be two classes of boats. IMOCA 60's and IMOCA 40's. Thats right either 60 footers or 40 footers.

Also a man just set a new around the world record alone in a sailboat. Look up Francis Joyon.
