  3. Washington D.C.

is the capital of the United States. Washington (the city) covers the same area as (i.e. is coterminous with) the District of Columbia (abbreviated as "D.C."). The city and the district are located on the banks of the Potomac River and bordered by Virginia to the southwest and Maryland to the northwest, northeast, and southeast. The city was planned and developed in the late 18th century to serve as the permanent national capital; the federal district was formed to keep the national capital distinct from the states.

The city was named after George Washington, the first president of the United States. The district's name, "Columbia," is an early poetic name for the United States and a reference to Christopher Columbus, an early explorer of the Americas. The city is commonly referred to as Washington, The District, or simply D.C. In the 19th century, it was called the Federal City or Washington City.[5] The official 2007 estimated population of Washington, D.C., was 588,292.[1] During the workweek, however, the number of commuters from the suburbs into the city swells the District's population an estimated 71.8% to a daytime population over one million people.

  4. Washington D.C. D.C. is District of Columbia

  5. Ottawa

  6. Washington D.C

  7. Let me clarify the answer. The capitol of the United States is Washington D.C. The DC stand for District of Columbia. It is not in Maryland. It is carved out of a piece of the state of Maryland and a piece of the state of Virginia. At the time it was created, it was pretty much dead center of the United States at the time. However, since it's creation, the United States expanded to the Pacific Ocean. Because it is considered it's own district, the laws while in the city may be different from the laws (things like traffic offenses, schools, zoning, that sort of thing) of either Maryland or Virginia.

  10. Which America? North? South? Central? The USA? American Samoa?

Oh, Crissy, DC isn't in Maryland-it's a separate city. It belongs to no state.

Have to comment one more time..."America" was named after Amerigo Vespucci, and was coined to refer to two whole continents. I don't know where, but somewhere along the line, we here in the USA have decided to appropriate that name for ourselves. I don't think it was intentional. There are close to thirty separate countries in "America". I mean no disrespect by my initial comment. I just think we should remember those other twenty-something countries and give them respect, as well.
