Whats the carb for on glass pipes?

The little hole on the side of glass pipes also known as a carb whats it do? I heard that you draw on the pipe with your finger on it then when your ready to inhale take your finger off the card to get a better hit... why would that give you a better hit letting in air?

As long as you have your finger on the hole, you are drawing air through the bowl, pulling it through the weed, and feeding oxygen to the (cherry), when the chamber is full to your liking, or you are close to completing your hit, you release your finger from the carb, emptying the chamber, and discontinuing draw from the bowl, otherwise, you would constantly draw from the bowl, and after taking a hit, there would be a stale chamber of smoke still inside. Besides, it is more effective if you draw some oxygen with the smoke, as it causes it to be less dense, and fills the sacs in your lungs more effectively, making the THC flow in your bloodstream as intended. By the way, it helps to cover the bowl almost all the way after releasing the carb. This will ensure no waste, plus, it creates a harder hit. Good luck!

So you can have a greater pull.  You get a bigger hit by cutting off the air supply and then pulling it in all at once.
