I am soon going to take the test to qualify for mensa, have an iq in the range of 126-150, but i have schizophrenia which causes me to get distracted, and all the symptoms. I'm interested in becoming a physicist, do you think i'll be able to do it?

  1. No dear

  2. When I was tested in elementary school I was given an IQ of 119 (just short of the gifted program damnit!) and now I'm an undergraduate physics student... And I also have ADD which I have taken medication for several times before. But last time I checked wasn't schizophrenia as close to insanity as you can get? Hearing voices right?

Whatever, as long as a shrink labels you as sane there is no reason why if you buckle down and don't care that studying physics sucks your time away like a an alcoholic on the beach with a bottomless pina colada than sure! Go for it! If you want to know how the universe works there is no better line of study... a idea of a schizophrenic physicist sounds like it could really spice up the local scientific community lol.

But in all seriousness if you can pull of A's in high school math and science classes than I see little reason why you can't be a physics major in college. Most colleges have ways of working with people with conditions that detriment their ability to learn.

  3. If you possess an IQ between 126 and 150, you can become a physicist and more.  This thing about schizophrenia, it's a complex illness and may or may not be what you believe it to be. There are medications that can help you deal with its effects; then, there are also technology that can be used to create simulated schizophrenic effects in people, remotely, and this technology is being used (tested) on populations of people right here in the US and in other developed nations around the world. Something to consider.

Remember John Forbes Nash in "A Beautiful Mind"?  He also suffered from paranoid schizophrenia but received a Nobel Prize in economics for developing game theory.

It was thought that both Einstein and Newton suffered from something called Asperger Syndrome, a mild form of autism. In Einstein's and Netwon's case, it was also thought that AS actually enhanced their ability to concentrate and work in isolation for very long periods of time. Some forms of mental illness can increase one's ability to work and find creative solutions to complex problems.
