  1. You can build a Zodiac 601 for about $34,615. That includes a new 80 HP Rotax 912UL engine package, and basic engine instruments. Add another $2,000 or so, if you want the 100 HP Rotax 912S. You can even buy the kit in parts, to stay within your budget. Zodiacs are well known for being safe, stable, 2 and 4 person airplanes, that are fun to fly.

I don't know if that meets your criteria for "affordable," but it's less than some new Chevy trucks.

  2. paper

  3. The Cub is an excellent aircraft but taildraggers like the Cub are more difficult to learn. With the dawning of the new Sport  Pilot class and just plain (plane?) nostalgia, the cub has increased tremendously in value. A good example these days can easily cost $35-45,000 or more. The Cessna 150 or 152 on the other hand being a trike gear, is easier to learn and probably quite a bit cheaper. A good example can be had for around $20,000. They are faster than cubs, low on maintenance, and a lot of fun to fly. And its a real airplane. You can get into ultralights and such a lot cheaper but not for any serious cross country type flying.

  4. agree on piper cub.

if you can, rent a cessna 150 or 172 not cheap but not oerly expensive

  5. greyhound

  6. paper airplanes.

  7. Piper Cubs are a common choice for novice pilots.  Relatively cheap and fairly simple to fly.  Prepare to be knocked around though.
