If you can rent a car, it would be worth it.  My boyfriend and I went to Puerto Rico and stayed at the Gran Melia a few weeks ago. The taxis are really expensive so he decided to rent a car.  It cost about 200 but we didn't have to pay for gas, they told us to bring it back as empty as possible, we had the gas light on! lol.  We went to the el morro, luquillo, the rainforest and just drove around.  To do all that with a taxi would have cost a fortune! Have fun on your trip, the Gran Melia is a beautiful resort, just beware they don't like people taking leftovers to your room unless it is from their resturants which cost 100 for two people, as long as its in a plastic bag you'll be fine ;).

I suggest renting a car.  Here are some tips.

First, don't rent with Hertz, they are expensive and if you let them fill the tank of gas, it will cost you more than what the real value is. I know I was a Hertz customer.

Many car rentals will give you the car with the tank from empty to full and you fill it. If you take the car empty, you fill it for

yourself and return it empty. I like this better because I put in what I use. So here are a few car rentals:

Before renting ask for the High way Toll Pass.  This is a small tag on the windshield behing the rear view mirror where when you go throught the tolls you go through the express lane with out depositing money because the toll tag or PASS is read by a laser at the toll and will automatically have the account sent. Here you pay what you spend at the tolls when you return to the rentals. Ask because prices of the tag vary.

So check out and compare what options each has for you. Now, if you have friends or family here they could take you but renting you can stop along the way at one of the towns to eat, walk around or just take in the wonderful view of the costal South.
