My great great grandfather came over from greece in the 1800's and he said what his last name was and so they were pretty idiotic back then and put yourgulez instead of his real last name. No one in my family knows what his last name was and what part of greece he was from. He was also a violinists.

  1. Georgoulis is the nearest one.

    Georgoulis means little George.

From the Greek name Γεωργιος (Georgios) which was derived from the Greek word γεωργος (georgos) meaning "farmer, earthworker", itself derived from the elements γη (ge) "earth" and εργον (ergon) "work".

When your great grand father was coming, family names were usually patronyms, i.e. father's name George > last name Georghiou ( George's ).

A patronym (or patronymic) is a name derived from the name of the father or another paternal ancestor.

So it can be from any part of Greece.

  2. Georgolis ?

I'm not Greek and I do not speak Greek, but I still think the original name may have been something like Georgolis or Georgulis. Do you have a Greek restaurant near to where you live, or some other type of business run by a Greek person ? You could ask them how the phonetic spelling might translate back to the original Greek. Sorry I can't help more.

It would benefit you to join a Greek family history/genealogy group who would be able to help you. Here are some links to Greek interest sites that you might not know about.
