  1. Very very expensive.  To find a place to live to accomodate that many children plus two adults you are easily looking at $1,800 or more for rent.  To buy a suitable house in Toronto at least $450,000.  Food, utilities, clothing, transportation, etc. is all very high as well.

  2. The cost of living in Toronto is quite high, mainly because of housing.  My daughter lives in a two bedroom apartment (tiny second bedroom) in Bloor West village.  It is in an older house, nice neighborhood.  Her rent is $1200 a month, which does include heat and hot water.  The house is old and needs work.  I would not consider it very suitable for kids.  As you move farther from downtown, rent is less.  My daughter says that you need to think in the range of $450,000 to buy a decent sized house in the GTA area now.  However, some other expenses such as groceries and utilities may be less, as there is more competition and more options.  Toronto and Vancouver are reported to have the highest cost of living in the country.  I hope this is of some help.  Best of luck.

  3. 5 kids under 10? (you guys need to learn how to just go to sleep sometimes lol.)

Seriously though, it depends on where in the city you want to live- I live in Scarborough, and a house with the size you want would probably be 350K and up. If you rented, it would probably be 1300+ utilities and up for a 3 bedroom house per month; Markham would be closer to 1600+. Check out www.viewit.ca and just click on different areas of town and check the pricing on rentals.

If you plan on working, then you need to factor in daycare- you might be eligible for subsidy (especially with all those kids), but the cost would still be pretty extensive. I have 1 child, no subsidy in daycare part time (3x week), and it's 650 a month.
